Distracted Walking:
Distraction can be a problem for pedestrians as well as drivers. Pedestrians who walk while not paying attention to the road ahead are at an increased risk of being hit by cars or trucks, or otherwise injuring themselves. Apparently, a large number of us can't walk and text at the same time, either. ... Fifty-two percent of distracted walking incidents involving cell phones happen at home – not adjacent to roadways, as many may believe, according to a study in the Journal of Safety.
Use of Headphones:
The use of headphones has sharply increased among pedestrians since the release of the I-Pod and the many other mobile music devices. Those walking with headphones may not hear cars behind them and could be injured in an accident. Researchers gathered information on 116 motor vehicle accidents in the United States involving pedestrians wearing headphones. More than two-thirds of the victims were male and under 30 years old.
